about

"Time Enough to Fail" I have mixed feelings about. The beat and guitar sound are very tasty. It rocks well enough. But the melody seems very Elvis Costello to me, tortured to fit the words somehow. I love it when he does it, but I'm not sure I do when I do so.

The text addresses something that's very frustrating for me: my supposed procrastination and laziness. Lousy with mixed metaphors, even for me. It's all blown up and distorted here, though, like a Sunday School lesson or something. It's preachy, maybe? And so long.

It's me kicking myself in song. Perhaps that's why no one's ever written or stopped me at a show to say, "You know what my favorite song is? 'Time Enough to Fail'." Almost never been downloaded as far as I know.

It's very artificial, this life story about a procrastinating ne'er-do-well. Especially with the awful blooper: "...Quarter could have meant FOUR long months of effort..." Uh...Lobster Lord, it's only three months to a quarter...?

Kind of counter-advice going on: a celebration of failure. A "do this or else you'll succeed" sort of twist. There are some great lines to me, though. Like the one about the about trolls under bridges writing memos on "lessons learned." Nice corporate ha-ha, there. It's a very corporate song of shame, I suppose.

So if anybody just LOVES this song, write and let me know. I always tell myself, "Somewhere somebody thinks this song speaks for them...Somewhere..." Lines are open. Let me know.

lyrics

"Time Enough to Fail"
[vonHummer]

There, did I leave myself time enough to fail?
Time enough to earn a failing grade?
If I'd have made the time to do a first draft,
I'd have laughed all the way to an "A,"
Instead I stuck all together just before class,
Well done, I can stay here having fun,
I dodged another graduation day...
Take it down: no one ever put a clown in the crosshairs,
Take it down: Mother Failure spoils all of her children like millionaires,
Take a tip from Captain Ahab: Leave alone the whale,
Work hard while the watchers are watching,
but leave time enough to fail...
There, did I leave myself time enough to fail?
Time enough to come in under quota?
Quarter could have meant three long months of effort,
but I thought better and just went through the motions,
taking no's and forsaking leads,
Well done, I can soak up the sun, unemployed again, naturally...
Take it down: no one ever put a clown in the crosshairs,
Take it down: Mother Failure spoils all of her children like millionaires,
Take a tip from Captain Ahab: Leave alone the whale,
Work hard while the watchers are watching,
but leave time enough to fail...
There, did I leave myself time enough to fail,
time enough to save up and retire?
Always did admire that carefree guy
singing that he was the "King of the Road,"
Burger King's got a dumpster that's loaded,
Well done, half a burger and a bun,
Great expectations exploded...
Look under every bridge behind us that never got burned:
you'll see a troll writing memos on "Lessons Learned,"
Someday should someone walk up and say,
"Congratulations, you've got it made,”
Thank 'em graciously and run the other way!
Take it down: no one ever put a clown in the crosshairs,
Take it down: Mother Failure spoils all of her children like millionaires,
Take a tip from Captain Ahab: Leave alone the whale,
Work hard while the watchers are watching,
but leave time enough to fail...
