about
This is one of those songs that I remember as springing fully-formed into being, words and melodies. (Usually I get the words first and then hastily arrange a marriage to the first melody that walks by.) "Sweet Revolving Door" is likely my most short-winded song, lyrics-wise. It seems to be about coming to appreciation of life's repeating patterns, which may be the only way out of the ruts we find ourselves stuck in.
Or maybe it's the idea that life, itself, is just a whirl around where all we experience is pointless? I wrote it, but these sprung-wholly-formed-from-the-head-of-Jupiter tunes often puzzle even me. I have to sit down with it myself, like a 9th grader with the Norton Anthology, and dope it all out.
One clever thing I see is that the repetitions of a phrase, ("...money and money/money and/money and/money and love...") which gives a cartoonish impression of going around and around, stuck in a revolving door, trying to get one's point across. And the song ends as it begun. Wow![And who but a Gemini like me could analyze his own poem as if he'd never read it before? Yeesh!]
It's a sweet melody and riff and every time I hear it I pray I won't suddenly recognize it as some hit song that already existed years ago. Probably by George Harrison. Seems like one of his songs to me. Inherently lonely sound there.
But then, revolving doors are supposed to be solo ventures.
lyrics
"Sweet Revolving Door"
(vonHummer)
Here I stand at last where I stood before,
pushing hard and fast: sweet revolving door,
Take a spin around again,
Take a spin around again,
Take a spin around again:
my sweet revolving door,
Tell me oh tell me oh tell me oh tell me, God,
What do I what do I what do I what do I do?
I got no I got no I got nowhere to run,
Neither do neither do neither do neither do you,
Take a spin around again,
Take a spin around again,
Take a spin around again:
my sweet revolving door,
Family and family and family and family and friends,
Money and money and money and money and love,
Wisdom and wisdom and wisdom and ingnorance
trapped in the trapped in the trapped in the circle shove,Take a spin around again,
Take a spin around again,
Take a spin around again:
my sweet revolving door,
Here I stand at last, where I stood before,
pushing hard and fast: sweet revolving door...
