Sometime Soon

about

This is the second recorded version of "Sometime Soon." The first was done "unplugged" for the "October Surprise" album, yet to be released. That version was done shortly after writing it while I was still madly in love with the song. Then a month or two later, after added a riff to it, I recorded this version. Very simple, straight-forward arrangement. Finally, I re-recorded it for the "Bübiwulf!" soundtrack, in a full 4-piece arrangement with an almost Genesis-like arrangement. (To my mind, anyhow.)

The lyrics started as a song for a girlfriend who stayed at work later and later, and came home less and less frequently. As that problem gets worse, you get an ugly breakup song, but this song is located more at the front end of the problem, where one still misses and feels affection for the absentee lover.

I had written the lyrics for this one for the first time in spring of 2004 and was greatly impressed with the wordplay and rhyme schemes, I seem to recall. Then, when I was ready to record the first version 8 months later, I couldn't find those lyrics. Had to do a total rewrite.

I don't know that this re-written version is better than the first, so I'll assume it's the case. It's a great little rocker and lovingly brief. Especially this version. It ends so fast, I have to shut off the drum machine at the end, like a rookie.

lyrics

"Sometime Soon"
[vonHummer]
Got no way of knowing where the wind is blowing
tumbleweed you for this past hour or two,
To have some notion of your homeward locomotion
would do, Can you steer it here, my dear,
and make it sometime soon?
Make it sometime soon, Maybe solve my mystery,
Sometime soon, Come to call, fool kiss-a-me,
Sometime soon, Que Será's okay by me,
When will be what will be we two?
Make it sometime soon, Shoot the moon, shucks,
shoot the breeze, Sometime soon, wanna be my wannabe?
Sometime soon seems to take an eternity,
Time's a-wastin' awaitin' on you...
What the hell is one more message sittin' on yer cell
gonna do to somehow summon you? I know you slip out
on your sloop whenever I'm in pursuit, Must I feign
disdain in vain to make it sometime soon?
Make it sometime soon, Maybe solve my mystery,
Sometime soon, Come to call, fool kiss-a-me,
Sometime soon, Que Será's okay by me,
When will be what will be we two?
Make it sometime soon, Shoot the moon, shucks,
shoot the breeze, Sometime soon, wanna be my wannabe?
Sometime soon seems to take an eternity,
Time's a-wastin' awaitin' on you...
