Oregon Tomorrow

about

I wrote this one having never seen Oregon. It's just a song of everything I hoped Portland would be—from the ugliness of the DC area—when I finally moved there. To my embarrassment, I soon found that Oregonians insist the accent for their state be placed on the first syllable and to make the last vowel a schwa "e," diacritically speaking. NOT cool to say oriGON, as I do throughout the song, making a gimmick of the "here today, GONE tomorrow" thing.

But despite that, "Oregon Tomorrow" found a fair share of fans in Portland. Not a top twenty download, but top 50, to be sure. Much of what I hoped for came true. I've been ridiculously happy in Porlland, all in all. I don't know that I've seen countless smiles on the populace here, but their faces do look much more relaxed than the East Coast grimace I remember being so prevalent in the late 90s. And there is most assuredly a dearth of Type A's out here. This state is SO Type B, I seem like a Type A by comparison. This is especially true when it comes to driving. The highways choke with traffic by virtue of everyone driving the speed limit. It's maddening, really.

lyrics

"Oregon Tomorrow" [vonHummer]

Here today/ but I'll be Oregon tomorrow/ I'm taking whatever uncommon sense/ may remain/ Losing everything/ too big to fit in the car I'll borrow/ and driving northwest till my windshield/ hits the rain/ that falls on a

God blessed beautiful land/ God blessed beautiful/ mountain and sea/ Some rich joy there/ may replace this sorrow/ here today/ but I'll be Oregon tomorrow…

Here today/ but I'll be Oregon tomorrow/ My ghost will be leaving the oily cogs/ of your machine/ The Fool and the Sun/ keep turning up in my tarot/ …to rain supreme/ and fall on a

God blessed beautiful land/ God blessed beautiful/ mountain and sea/ Some rich joy there/ may replace this sorrow/ here today/ but I'll be Oregon tomorrow…

Strange how…for no reason/ Can't count all the smiles I see/ People walk around like they like to, regardless of season/ Not a Type A in sight/ Glory B!
