Methylisothiazolinone

about

"Methylisothiazolinone" is a sweet little song. It's a also an ingredient in shampoo. Go on and look in the shower, I'll wait...

...See? I have no idea what it does, that chemical.
I first saw it in the late 90s when my wife at the time had a shampoo called, "Honey Almond." In looking to see whether there was either honey or almond in the ingredients I found only an anthill of chemical names, of which Methylisothiazolinone was the longest.

I resolved instantly to write a song to help me remember those names so that I could spit them out blithely and amuse people at the dinner parties in my head. And ironically, I called the song "Honey Almond!"

That was aroundabout 1994. The song idea lasted, but Honey Almond shampoo did not, and in 2003 while I was casting about for the original lyrics and couldn't find them, I picked some other shampoo for inspiration.
But the ingredients just weren't as musical as the ones from Honey Almond shampoo.

Methylisothiazolinone was in there, at least, and so I forged on and rewrote for the new ingredients, plus a whole new sweet tune. Which no one, to the best of my knowledge has ever EVER downloaded.

But still, someone out there in my audience is very familiar with this chemical and will be just blown away by my song, and it will have all been worthwhile.

lyrics

"Methylisothiazolinone"
[vonHummer]
Lauramide DEA messed me up okay,
Ethoxydiglicol made my world seem small,
Benzenephenone 4 sank me just offshore,
and my love has only grown for Methylisothiazolinone...

Tetrasodium EDTA made me swing and sway,
Viatin and niacin properly snowed me in,
Oxyhexyltrimonial chloride helped my fears subside,
and my love has only grown for Methylisothiazolinone...

Aloebarbidensis gel half-convinced me all was well,
Ethnynol broke my fall,
Coenzyme nicotenate left me nervous but sedate,
Propylparaben: a godsend,
Cocamidolpropylbetane reigned my brain,
and my love has only grown for Methylisothiazolinone...
