about

"Mansion on the Moon" was written in the Summer of 2003 at a time when I was listening to a lot of Hank Williams. He had a song called "The Mansion on the Hill" that was rather spooky. Every time I heard that song whenever he'd sing "mansion on the hill" I heard in my mind, "mansion on the moon." No idea why.

But the idea was so novel to me that I wrote a song around that title. This was a time when I was feeling very much like a failure, and turning inward for comfort and wanting isolation.

It's sad on the verses, angry on the choruses, and desperate on the bridge. In short, just about all anybody could ask for in a song, when they're feeling down. I felt a lot better after I wrote it.

There's a kind of acceptance of past misfortunes and mistakes, and a "let go/let god" kind of philosophy here and there. It almost reads a bit suicidal, but for the "..as soon as someone upstairs okays it..." which seems more like "I'll die when it's my destined time."

The "Mansion on the Moon" referred to seems to be a kind of empty Heaven, perhaps where material wealth is abundant due to its remoteness, a place above for losers to enjoy what the winners below have.

Builds nicely, production-wise, starting with just a voice and a bass til it's a full band. That's something I do a lot now, but that was probably the first time I thought of doing it, oddly enough. Otherwise, I tend to get the instruments going all at once and keep 'em going.

lyrics

"Mansion on the Moon" [vonHummer]

If ever I can scrape the money together, pay what I owe you,
him, them, and her, I’m gonna move out,
leave everything behind me: keep it, sell it, throw it away

I won’t care, and if you remember I was ever there
and you wonder how I’m doin’,
drop me a line straight up in the air
to the Mansion on the Moon…

As soon as someone inside upstairs okays it,
gives me the nod, eh, I’ll drop my tools
and vanish in a cloud of overdraft fees:
stiff ‘em, pay em, write ‘em all off

I won’t care, and if you should notice I’m no longer there,
and you’d like to know what’s doin’,
shout in the night on a midnight clear
to the Mansion on the Moon…

Surely you’ve heard of the Mansion on the Moon?
Bequeathed by Jesus in no beatitude to the losers
and shakers of an empty horn of plenty,
delivered by Life, postage due...
Blessed are we with fuck all,
Fuck you and you and you:
I’m leaving for my Mansion on the Moon…

If ever I can ascertain my life’s purpose has finally played out,
I’ll fade away, I’ll catch the last bus (and for once I won’t miss it):
board it, ride it, feet up, okay

I won’t care, and if you should notice no bystander there
on the way from rags to ruin,
Eat, drink, and make sweet love by glare of
the Mansion on the Moon...
