about

"I Am Polluted" dates back to circa 1991. I came up with the title first, which struck me as rather Townshend-like. And then a bit comical, if used as a synonym for "drunk." I was hoping to write a rather spiritual song full of deep insights, but upon examining what remained after the song wrote itself, I found it considerably simpler than I'd imagined. Zen-like, even. Which may account for its popularity over the years, this one being in the top 20 of all my downloads. Easy to play, easy to remember the words, if I haven't rehearsed at all, I'll pick this song to play live.

I have no idea what the "big plane fly/big horn sound" line means. That really came outta nowhere, but seemed right. To me, it's seems to convey opportunities leaving somehow, like ships or planes would; deals going down without the narrator, he's so lost in his corruption.

Still, there's a kind of self-acceptance at the end. So I'm polluted. So what?

lyrics

“I Am Polluted”
[vonHummer]

I am polluted/ who knows why/ and it looks like I’m gonna live til I die/ Looks like I’m gonna live/ like a pig in a sty/ Well my reasoning is convoluted/ and I am polluted/

Big plane fly/ Big horn sound/ Big opportunity/ Big deal going down/ Big small chance/ I can step out/ Big small fears and choices and voices/ I can’t figure out/

I am polluted/ Who cares how/ and it looks like my later’s happening now/ Looks like my later/ has taken a bow/ Wow cause and effect are uprooted/ and I am polluted/

Slow as molasses/ I am polluted/ Tic toc time passes/ I am polluted/ Just one of the masses/ I am polluted/ I am polluted/ who knows why/ Who cares how/
