"Different Blues" is a post-divorce song I wrote from the guilt of having to leave my son with his mother when I moved out. I was imagining that, although in appearance I looked the same, everything he knew about me was different now. It was a horrible, bittersweet time, as I left the old battle-ax for a new love, while missing my kid the whole time.
To me, the blues is like baseball: more fun to play than watch, so I did my best to keep "Different Blues" from the horrible predictability of the style, without abandoning form. Hard to say--beyond my satisfaction with the song--how successful I was at that. "Different Blues" never downloaded in even the top 75. Come to think of it, I've never heard a single good thing about this one by anyone. Or even anything bad.
Bob Seger once said, "Audiences don't lie," so I guess I have to conclude from all that, this song sucks. But I can't. I love it. My songs are like my children. I love 'em all.
lyrics
"Different Blues" [vonHummer]
Your Daddy’s face shaves in a different mirror now, Your Daddy’s face shaves in a different mirror now, his whiskers wash down a different drain to a different river in a different town...
Your Daddy’s hands turn a different doorknob now, Your Daddy’s hands turn a different doorknob now, his key ring jingles with different keys, move a different door latch in and out...
Your Daddy’s laugh bounces off different friends, your Daddy’s lips mumble some different names, your Daddy’s means justify by different ends, but his heart breaks just the same...
Your Daddy’s eyes stare down a different ceiling now, Your Daddy’s eyes stare down a different ceiling now, where he’s hoping the light of a different dawn shows him something different somewhere somehow...

Long split up, but not forgotten. Some say the Winebirds functioned as an ersatz Fleetwood Mac, and that's more than fair, but to me, they functioned as a real-life Partridge Family. vonHummer
