about
"Crawl Like an Eagle" is about religion, or perhaps, more accurately religious indoctrination. To me, there's a class going on here: elder eagles teaching the younger ones how to be eagles. Except they've got it all wrong. These teachers have come to believe that eagles are supposed to crawl, not fly. That God has cast down their species; "grounded" them. And with that critical misunderstanding it seems these eagles are perpetuating another generation of failed, un-natural eagles. Eagles that fear wind and seashores and have to sneak up on snakes from behind.
No doubt my oppositional mind one day turned around Steve Miller's "Fly Like an Eagle" to come up with the song title. I do that a lot.
Eric's rolling beat really makes this song. He didn't have bongos. Was it a dumbek? I think it was.
lyrics
"Crawl Like an Eagle"
[vonHummer]
Feels unnatural when you try it at first, but get your beak on the ground and spread your wings in the dirt, dig those talons in and give it your all, keep one eye to the sky and let the feathers just fall,
And you can crawl like an eagle, yes you can crawl like an eagle, you gotta crawl like an eagle: low and slow and lowly but regal, we’re here to help you learn to crawl like an eagle…
Feels unnatural, ah, but things could be worse, so take your place on the planet, our kind has been cursed, God says grounded is the way we should be, but when you die you can fly if you’ll just listen to me,
And you can crawl like an eagle, yes you can crawl like an eagle, you gotta crawl like an eagle: low and slow and lowly but regal, we’re here to help you learn to crawl like an eagle…
Crawl like an eagle! Hit the heath, you! Crawl like an eagle, keep the earth underneath you! Mute your cries, don’t trust your eyes, listen for snakes and take ‘em by surprise!
...Low and slow and lowly but regal, we’re here to help you learn to crawl like an eagle…
Once-mighty eagles from the heavens we fell, overloaded by sin, to hump along in this hell, time to teach you now about enemies like Distance and Height, Seashore and Breeze,
And you can crawl like an eagle, yes you can crawl like an eagle, you gotta crawl like an eagle: low and slow and lowly but regal, we’re here to help you learn to crawl like an eagle…
