Coversong

from October Surprise by vonHummer

about

Always looking for new ways to do cover songs, I started cataloging one day the many different songs that used that same three chord progression. Then strung them together in a monotonous medley that works quite well. This is one I never feel nervous playing as it's flub-proof.

I never had a proper recorded version of this song. I put it together for the first vonHummer live shows in the summer of 2001. The second show (at the Mad Hatter!) was taped and that version of "Coversong" was used a lot in the tv show. The video sound wasn't great and I didn't want to post it for download.

By summer 2004, though, fans were writing in asking for it, so I rerecorded it using the same production I did for that performance. This is likely the last recording I did with the black Applause acoustic bass used on so many of my earlier songs.

I do cheat on some of the songs, I realize now. For instance, "Heat of the Moment" does not avail itself of those same 3 chords exactly. Close, but they fiddle with it some. Neither does Guess Who's "Share the Land." Whatever. I was on a roll.
