about

"Cheerleader" is a song I'm particularly proud of. Killer riff, clever wordplay, and emotional, too. I wrote the original seed of the lyrics sometime in the late 90s while unhappily married—a time when I would have been happy to just have somebody not actively destroying me, much less rooting for me.

In the original version, I envisioned it being very slow, very Peter Gabriel sad. Once I came up with riff, in about 2005, I knew it had to be fast. Or chugging, at least. I tinkered with the words somewhat, adding and deleting lines to fit the meter.

It's a tricky song for me to play and sing live, what with all the chording up and down the neck. I've added and then subtracted it many times in set lists over the years. I'll keep trying, though.

I've surely gotten better at playing since then?

lyrics

"Cheerleader" [vonHummer]

It can wait an hour/Wait another year/I can keep my eyes unfocused/and my feelings unclear/Maybe things will change?/Maybe/my heart will reappear?

It can wait a month/Wait a half a minute/I could tell her straight to her face/but there’s no point in it/Maybe things will change?/Maybe/someday I’ll feel committed?/

I need a cheerleader/I need a whole damn squad/to cheer me on as I play God/

I need a cheerleader/Need one on my side/Unqualified support/Loud, possessive pride/And when my excuses are wearing thin/she can be my reason to win/my reason to get back up again/

It can wait til lunch/Wait until late Spring/I’ll be built back enough by then/to run down this whole damn thing/Maybe we’ll both change?/Maybe we’ll all let freedom ring?

I need a cheerleader/I need a whole damn squad/to cheer me on as I play God/

I need a cheerleader/Need one on my side/Unqualified support/Loud, possessive pride/And when my excuses are wearing thin/she can be my reason to win/my reason to get back up again/
