about

"A Love Like Ours" was probably inspired by my annoyance at some sappy Top 40 love song or other. Roundabout 1992, I wrote the original lyrics for this one to be a song on a kind of joke album I was thinking of doing with a Casio digital guitar. That's why the lyrics are a tad silly ("...a lifelike love like ours...")

The tune from 1992 survived the trip to 2006, and some of the words of the chorus, but otherwise I re-wrote it entirely, understanding it now as a kind of Psychadellic-Dylan love song.

The production on this version owes a lot to "Cold Call" from my series. Same sort of riff. Also, this is my tribute to one of my favorite Monkees songs/sounds, "Sweet Young Thing," which has this wonderful country/celtic rock stomp to it. I was trying, possibly unconsciously, to recreate that sound.

It's a breath of fresh, non-minor air on this soundtrack of rather melancholy songs.

lyrics

"A Love Like Ours" [vonHummer]

A love/like ours/will grow between the cracks/of crumbling sidewalks where/uncaring robots ramble/

A love/like ours/could make the dead to rise/Cut down those corporate guys/and set a good example/

A love like ours/could put a man off Mars/A love like ours/A lifelike love like ours/

A love like ours/could make God obsolete/and make the government/repent of all its sins/

A love like ours/could burn across the skies/as if to advertise/our naked, sweaty skins/

A love like ours/in parked but unmarked cars/A love like ours/a lifelike love like ours/

A love like ours/that everyone could share/and pass around like hash/like trash to be recycled/

A love like ours/could live and never die/oh why why oh why/were you not there when I called?

A love like ours/could piss upon the stars/A love like ours/a lifelike love like ours/

A love like ours/in parked but unmarked cars/A love like ours/a lifelike love like ours/
